What a good trade job ad really needs: the complete guide

A job ad is often the first and only point of contact between your business and a specialist who's wondering whether a change is worth it. Yet it's often written as an afterthought, following the same pattern as ten years ago. This guide breaks down what actually matters for every part of an ad.

1. The headline: specific, not generic

A headline like 'Electrician wanted' says nothing about what sets this role apart. Better: the specific trade, the workload, and a detail that makes the role tangible, for example 'Certified electrician for new-build projects, 80 to 100 percent.' Reading the headline should immediately tell someone what the role is about.

2. The role description: the actual day, not the job description

Most ads list responsibilities you could just as easily find in a training manual. A description of the actual working day is far more useful: which projects are you working on, how big is the on-site team, how much independence is expected. Concrete examples are more credible than general phrases.

3. Employer benefits: only what's actually true

Pay, working hours, training opportunities, a company vehicle, team size: these often matter more than the job title. The key is only mentioning what's genuinely true. Overstated promises show up at the latest during the interview and damage trust.

4. The application process: as short as possible

Every extra click, mandatory field, and account signup costs you candidates who were already convinced. A simple path, such as a WhatsApp number or an email address with brief instructions, noticeably lowers that hurdle.

5. Tone: like a conversation, not a form

Many ads read like internal documents. An ad that speaks directly to the reader and sounds like a short, honest conversation gets read to the end and answered more often.

6. Distribution: the ad has to actually be seen

Even the best ad is useless if it only sits in one place. A combination of your own website, social channels, and targeted outreach also reaches skilled workers who aren't actively searching.
