Active sourcing in the trades: how to approach passive candidates the right way

Most good tradespeople aren't actively job hunting. They're employed, content enough, and would never respond to a classic listing. Active sourcing means reaching out to exactly these people directly, before they've even considered a change. Done well, it's one of the most effective methods in the trades; done poorly, it comes across as intrusive and damages your business's reputation.

Why classic listings don't reach passive candidates

A listing only reaches people who are actively searching for it. Passive candidates simply never see it, no matter how well it's written. Reaching this group means making the first move yourself.

Choosing the right channels

In the trades, personal channels often work better than classic professional networks. WhatsApp, Instagram, and personal recommendations reach skilled workers where they actually spend time. A cold message on a professional network often feels out of place in this context.

The first message: short, specific, no pressure

The first outreach decides whether you get a reply at all. It should be short, specifically name why this particular person is being approached, and apply no pressure. A message like 'I saw you've been working as a [trade] for a few years. We're currently looking for exactly this profile, no obligation to just take a look' works far better than an impersonal mass message.

Timing and follow-up

Few passive candidates reply right away. A friendly, low-key follow-up after one to two weeks shows genuine interest without feeling pushy. Giving up after one unanswered message leaves a lot of potential contacts on the table.

What to do when someone says no

A decline isn't a lost opportunity. Staying friendly and professional often leads to a referral, or to that person reaching out on their own months later once their situation changes.
