Referrals as a recruiting channel: how to build a referral program in the trades

In the trades, word of mouth is often the most effective recruiting channel, yet it's rarely used systematically. A simple referral program turns occasional recommendations into a reliable, repeatable channel.

Why referrals work so well

Someone who hears about an open position from a colleague or a former trainer already trusts the source. That pre-qualification is completely absent from every other recruiting method.

Step 1: actually ask for it

Most employees would refer someone if asked, but few businesses actually ask. A short, regular reminder, for example at a team meeting or in a WhatsApp group, is often enough.

Step 2: make it as easy as possible

If making a referral means filling out a long form, it will happen far less often. A simple path, such as a direct message to you or a quick WhatsApp contact, lowers that hurdle noticeably.

Step 3: offer recognition, where it makes sense

A small reward, for example a bonus once the referred person passes their probation period, can create extra motivation. What matters is that it's fair and applied equally across the whole team.

Step 4: say thank you, regardless of outcome

Not every referral leads to a hire. Thanking people anyway ensures the next referral still comes.
